Handset vs Twilio

Twilio gives you telecom primitives for the whole world. Handset gives vertical SaaS the application layer you'd otherwise build on top of them — tenants, opt-outs, 10DLC, threading, and a React component kit, handled.

Twilio or Handset? Twilio is a global CPaaS with the broadest channel surface; Handset is the vertical-SaaS application layer above it — multi-tenant, compliant, and billed on usage — so you embed a business phone system instead of building one on raw APIs.

Choose Twilio when

  • You need global reach across 180+ countries and channels beyond voice and SMS — WhatsApp, email (SendGrid), video.
  • You're building your own communications platform and want the lowest-level primitives to shape yourself.
  • You have the engineering to own subaccounts, opt-out enforcement, and 10DLC orchestration in-house.

Choose Handset when

  • You're a vertical SaaS embedding phone for your own customers — every tenant needs its own number, threads, and hours.
  • You want STOP/HELP, opt-out enforcement, and 10DLC brands and campaigns as API objects, not code you maintain.
  • You want to ship in an afternoon with drop-in React components and usage-based billing you can re-bill to customers.

HandsetUS business phone for vertical SaaS — focused, not sprawling

Handset is the business-phone API for vertical SaaS: compliant two-way SMS, inbound voice, voicemail, and phone numbers through one API — multi-tenant, with opt-outs and 10DLC handled, and drop-in React components.

Questions

Handset vs Twilio

Is Handset a Twilio alternative?

Yes. Handset is a business-phone API built for vertical SaaS platforms that would otherwise assemble a multi-tenant application layer on top of Twilio. Opt-outs, threading, 10DLC registration, and per-customer numbers are handled for you.

Can I migrate from Twilio to Handset?

Yes. Your send calls stay nearly identical (POST /v1/messages with from, to, and body), subaccounts map to tenants, and numbers port in. The whole migration rehearses in test mode before any real number moves.

Does Handset support both voice and SMS like Twilio?

Handset does two-way SMS and MMS, inbound voice with hours-based routing, voicemail with transcripts, and click-to-call. It does not do WhatsApp, email, or video — if you need those channels, Twilio's surface is broader.

Is Handset cheaper than Twilio?

Handset bills a flat base plus usage designed to be re-billed to your customers, instead of per-message pricing plus add-ons for the platform features you would otherwise build yourself. Total cost depends on volume.
